Michael Klubertanz ist schon als Kind fasziniert von der Wirkung musikalischer Motive auf Film und Fernsehen: Er kann sämtliche Titelmelodien nachsingen und beginnt als Jugendlicher – angefangen mit dem E.T.-Score –, berühmte Soundtracks zu sammeln. Während des Studiums macht er sich daran, Stummfilmprojekte mit eigenen Kompositionen zu vertonen, ab 2011 folgen dann kontinuierlich zahlreiche unabhängige Produktionen bis hin zu Kino- und Fernsehfilmen.
Seine Erfahrung als Dirigent und Musiker beeinflusst Michaels orchestrales Schreiben grundlegend. Er komponiert so, dass seine Musik jederzeit von realen Musiker:innen spielbar bleibt – ein Anspruch, der sowohl für authentische akustische Ergebnisse als auch für spätere Live‑Aufnahmen essenziell ist. Das Komponieren ist für ihn „eine hochwillkommene Möglichkeit zum schöpferischen Umgang mit Klang“. So kann er, wie er sagt, „neue Welten von Grund auf erzeugen und in Beziehung zum Bild setzen.“
Die Entstehung einer neuen Klangwelt beginnt für ihn lange vor dem ersten Bild. Er sammelt Farben, Texturen und musikalische Ideen, skizziert Themen und Stimmungen und entwickelt daraus ein klangliches Fundament, das den gesamten Film trägt. Präzises Timing und sorgfältig gewählte Tempi runden den kreativen Prozess ab, in dem immer Platz bleibt für überraschende Lösungen.
Stilistisch ist Michael bewusst vielfältig. Er versucht stets zu verstehen, was für das jeweilige Projekt wichtig ist, experimentiert immer wieder mit neuen Kompositionstechniken und klingt daher nie gleich. Akustische Instrumente machen einen großen Teil seiner Palette aus, er integriert aber auch Elektronik, und vor allem jene Klangelemente in seine Scores, die konkret etwas mit dem Film und seinen Figuren zu tun haben: Dort finden sich dann Klänge von Kaffeebechern, Leichenkühlschränken, Pingpongbällen oder gar Walgesänge. Besonders charakteristisch für seine Arbeit sind zudem atmosphärische Effekte wie Shimmer und granulare Texturen, die seinen ruhigeren Passagen eine besondere Tiefe verleihen.
Michael Klubertanz has been fascinated by the effect of musical motifs on film and television since childhood. He could sing along to all the theme tunes and, as a teenager, started collecting famous soundtracks, beginning with the E.T. score. During his studies, he started setting silent film projects to music using his own compositions. In 2011, he moved on to numerous independent productions, including cinema and television films.
Michael’s experience as a conductor and musician has a fundamental influence on his orchestral writing. He composes in such a way that his music can always be performed by real musicians – a requirement essential for achieving authentic acoustic results and for later live recordings. For Michael, composing is “a highly welcome opportunity to engage creatively with sound”. This enables him, in his words, “to create new worlds from scratch and relate them to the image”.
For him, creating a new sound world begins long before the first image appears. He collects colours, textures, and musical ideas; sketches themes and moods; and uses these to develop a tonal foundation that carries the entire film. Precise timing and carefully chosen tempos bring the creative process to a close, leaving room for surprising solutions.
Stylistically, Michael is deliberately diverse. He tries to understand what is important for each project, experiments constantly with new compositional techniques, and therefore never sounds the same. Acoustic instruments form a large part of his palette, but he also incorporates electronics and, above all, sound elements with a specific connection to the film and its characters. These include the sounds of coffee cups, morgue refrigerators, ping-pong balls, and even whale songs. Atmospheric effects, such as shimmer and granular textures, are also particularly characteristic of his work, lending special depth to his quieter passages.
